Identity & basics

  • PAN card
  • Aadhaar, linked to PAN and an active mobile number
  • Bank account number and IFSC for refunds
  • Last year's filed return and acknowledgement
  • Form 26AS downloaded from the income tax portal
  • Annual Information Statement (AIS) downloaded and reviewed

Salary income

  • Form 16 from every employer during the year
  • Salary slips, especially around a job change
  • Rent receipts and landlord PAN, if claiming HRA
  • Leave travel allowance proofs, if claimed

Investment & other income

  • Bank and post office interest certificates
  • Savings account interest for the full year
  • Capital gains / tax P&L statement from your broker
  • Mutual fund capital gains statement
  • Dividend statements
  • Rental income details and municipal tax paid

Business or professional income

  • Books of account or receipts-and-expenses summary
  • Bank statements for all business accounts
  • GST returns filed during the year
  • Fixed asset purchase invoices for depreciation
  • Loan statements showing interest paid

Deduction proofs (old regime only)

  • Life insurance premium receipts
  • PPF / ELSS / NSC statements
  • Children's tuition fee receipts
  • Health insurance premiums, including for parents (80D)
  • Home loan interest and principal certificate
  • Education loan interest certificate (80E)
  • Donation receipts with institution registration details (80G)
